Cut & Polished Agatized Ammonite Fossils - 1 1/4 to 1 1/2" Size

These are gorgeous, agate replaced ammonite fossils which have been cut in half and polished to reveal all of the detail of the inner chambers. It's a real cool fossil that would make a great gift or could even be used to make jewelry. They range from approximately 1 1/4 to 1 1/2" wide and are about 1/4" thick. The photos are some representative examples of what they look like.

The ammonites are Middle Cretaceous in age, or approximately 110 million years old and collected from the Mahajanga Province of Madagascar.

Ammonites were predatory cephalopod mollusks that resembled squids with spiral shells. They are more closely related to living octopuses, though their shells resemble that of nautilus species. True ammonites appeared in the fossil record about 240 million years ago during the Triassic Period. The last lineages disappeared 65 million years ago at the end of the Cretaceous.
