6.35" Realistic, Polished Moss Agate Skull

This is a 5.9" long polished skull that was formed from moss agate. The agate has been meticulously sculpted and polished into the shape of a skull. There are several pockets throughout this skull that are encrusted in quartz crystals. The underside of the skull has been hollowed-out, making the specimen closer in resemblance to a real skull.

Moss agate is a variety of chalcedony, frequently containing colorful green, red, or brown mineral inclusions similar to fluffy patches of moss. They can also have brown to black dendrites of iron or manganese oxides.

Quartz is the name given to silicon dioxide (SiO2) and is the second most abundant mineral in the Earth's crust. Quartz crystals generally grow in silica-rich environments--usually igneous rocks or hydrothermal environments like geothermal waters--at temperatures between 100°C and 450°C, and usually under very high pressure. In either case, crystals will precipitate as temperatures cool, just as ice gradually forms when water freezes. Quartz veins are formed when open fissures are filled with hot water during the closing stages of mountain formation: these veins can be hundreds of millions of years old.
