Three Miocene Pea Crab (Pinnixa) Fossils - California

These are three, 8 million year old fossil "pea crabs", Pinnixa galliheri from San Luis Obispo County, California. The orange coloration is due to iron oxide. This specimen is part of a relatively new find in the Monterey Formation which contains beautifully preserved crabs with complete leg and body preservation. These crab fossils are no exception!

The largest crab measures 1.3" wide.
