This is a plate of fossil trackways (cruziana) of arthropods, in this case likely trilobites, collected near Erfoud, Morocco. The two rows of evenly spaced lines show where the trilobite's legs would push up the muddy sea floor, leaving tracks similar to the way a tire leaves tracks in the mud. The cruziana measures 5.6" long in an arc, and is beautifully preserved on a thick slab of mudstone. This trackway is rather wide, and could be either two parallel trackways or the trackway of a single large trilobite.

These trackways would be Ordovician in age, or approximately 450 million years old.

Trilobites were a very diverse group of extinct marine arthropods. They first appeared in the fossil record in the Early Cambrian (521 million years ago) and went extinct during the Permian mass extinction (250 million years ago). They were one of the most successful of the early animals on our planet: over 25,000 species have been described, filling nearly every evolutionary niche. Due in large part to their hard exoskeletons (shells), they left an excellent fossil record.
