10.2" Jurassic, Cut & Polished Ammonite (Half) - Madagascar

This is a stunning, 10.2" wide, orange colored ammonite fossil which has been cut in half and polished to reveal the inner chamber detail. It was collected near Sakaraha in the Tulear Province of Madagascar and is Late Jurassic in age, or approximately 160 million years old.

Many of the living chambers remained hollow during fossilization and became lined with orange colored quartz crystals in a similar process to how geodes form. There are quite few species/genus of Phylloceratid family but there are several similar genus and species found in the area.

As with nearly all of the larger ammonites there is some repair work as they are naturally fractured while in the ground and need to be stabilized during the collection and preparation process. One half of the ammonite is included along with a display stand.
