Here is an absolutely jaw-dropping display piece. It is a massive, matched geode pair from Uruguay that stands nearly 6 feet tall on its custom metal display stands. This monster geode was carefully extracted from the hard basalt formations near Artigas, Uruguay. It was then masterfully prepared by the local expert craftsman to create a natural work of art.

It has been cut in half and mounted onto two separate stands, making for a stunning display piece that is sure to turn heads. Each half of the geode measures 53.5" tall, and stands 70.5" tall including the custom metal display base.

The edge of this amethyst geode has been polished and the crystals within the geode exhibit exceptional color. There are stalactite-like formations throughout each half of this geode and one geode half contains large calcite crystals. The "rind" has been polished all the way around to show off the mineral transition layers between the rock and amethyst crystals. We can pretty much guarantee this incredible specimen will look even better in person than in the photos.

Each half of this geode includes the custom metal display stand shown in the photos. The geode half without calcite measures 53.5" tall, 18" wide at its widest point and is 10.5" deep. The half with calcite is also 53.5" tall, but is 17.5" wide and 19.5" deep, much deeper than the other half. On the stand, each half stands just over 70" (almost 6 feet tall). We don't have an exact weight, but including the bases, combined they probably weigh around 700 lbs. It took five people to (carefully) wrestle the larger one up onto its stand.

While Brazil is a much more prolific producer of amethyst, the amethyst mined near Artigas, Uruguay tends to be much darker with higher quality crystals. We import our material directly from the mines in Uruguay, allowing us to offer it at better retail prices than anyone else. We carry a large variety of geodes, amethyst clusters, and collector quality crystal formations.

Amethyst is a purple variety of quartz (SiO2) that owes its violet color to natural irradiation, iron impurities, and the presence of trace elements, resulting in complex crystal lattice substitutions. It is considered a semi-precious gemstone, and just two centuries ago was considered to have a value on par with diamonds, sapphires, and rubies. The largest and best known amethyst deposits occur in southern Brazil and Uruguay, but many localities around the world produce an amazing variety of amethyst crystals and formations.
