8.3" Amethyst "Jewelry Box" Geode On Metal Stand - Uruguay

This is a beautiful dark purple amethyst geode from Artigas, Uruguay which has been cut open, polished, and mounted on a stand allowing both halves to be displayed. The amethyst crystals feature gorgeous purple coloration. The dimensions of the base geode half are 8.3 x 8 x 4.8" and the dimensions of the lid half of this geode are 8.1 x 7.5 x 3.3". On the stand, the entire specimen is 15.2" tall. There are repaired and stabilized cracks through both the lid and base of this geode. The crystals on the interior of the base geode have been stabilized with a thin layer of glue. Some of the crystals on the lid portion are damaged.

While Brazil is a much more prolific producer of amethyst, the amethyst mined near Artigas, Uruguay tends to be much darker with higher quality crystals. Amethyst is a purple variety of quartz (SiO2) that owes its violet color to natural irradiation, iron impurities, and the presence of trace elements, resulting in complex crystal lattice substitutions. It is considered a semi-precious gemstone, and just two centuries ago was considered to have a value on par with diamonds, sapphires, and rubies. The largest and best known amethyst deposits occur in southern Brazil and Uruguay, but many localities around the world produce an amazing variety of amethyst crystals and formations.
