Sparkly Botryoidal Green Wavellite Formation - Arkansas #280740

This is a beautiful, 2.6" wide botryoidal aggregation of radiating wavellite crystals with green coloration. The botryoidal exterior of the crystals have an alluring sparkle when rotated under a light source, and the periphery of the specimen shows the multiple layered green hues of these spherical wavellite formations. It was collected from the Mauldin Mountain Quarries (County Pit) of Montgomery County, Arkansas.

Wavellite is a phosphate mineral with the chemical formula Al3(PO4)2(OH)3·5H2O. It is widely known for its green radial crystal formations that for many years have been referred to as "cat's-eye" by local collectors. It is often found as green crystals that can vary in color intensity, ranging from dark emerald green to pale green depending on conditions during formation. While it may be best known for its spherical radiating crystal formations, it has also been found as botryoidal crusts and stalactitic deposits. Wavellite is most commonly found within cracks of aluminum-rich metamorphic rock and phosphate deposits.
