Framed Phareodus & Diplomystus Fossil Fish - Wyoming

This is a gorgeous, framed, natural association of a Phareodus testis & Diplomystus dentatus from the Green River Formation. It was collected from the famous 18 inch layer at Warfield's Quarry near Kemmerer. The Phareodus (an uncommon fish) is 5.7" in length and the Diplomystus is 7" in length. The unbroken slab of rock as been set in an elegant black frame, ready to be hung on a wall.

Like most fish from the 18 inch layer their is some minor restoration to the fins and where bits may have flaked during preparation but the color is natural.

50 million years ago, in the Eocene these fish thrived in Fossil Lake fed by Uinta and Rocky Mtn. highlands. The anoxic conditions at the bottom of Fossil Lake slowed bacterial decomposition, prevented scavengers from disturbing corpses, and most interestingly, suffocated creatures that ventured into the oxygen-starved aquatic layer. The result is a miraculous exhibition of Eocene biota in a subtropical, aquatic community within sycamore forests teeming with creatures such as freshwater stingrays, dog-sized horses, menacing alligators, early flying bats, and one of the first primates.
