8.8" Fossil Turtle (Lytoloma) Skull - Khouribga, Morocco

This is a 8.8" long fossil turtle (Lytoloma elegans) skull from the Late Cretaceous phosphate deposits near Khouribga, Morocco. You see a lot of these on the market that are completely fake or composites but this is a real one with very little restoration. It's been meticulously prepared, reassembled and remounted back on the rock.

It comes from the massive phosphate deposits in the Oulad Abdoun Basin near Khouribga, Morocco. These deposits are mined for phosphate, one of Morocco's biggest exports. The fossils are collected as a byproduct of the mining operations, saving them from certain destruction by the rock crusher.
