5" Fossil Metoposaurid Skull Section - Chinle Formation, Arizona

This is a 5" wide skull section (osteoderm) of a Metoposaurid that was collected from the Chinle Formation of Arizona. It was found with multiple cracks through it which were repaired with glue. One of the repaired cracks required gap fill restoration along one edge of the specimen.

The preservation detail of this specimen is exceptional and it comes with the pictured custom metal display stand.

Metoposauridae is an extinct family of heavily armored, large-sized, Late Triassic herbivorous temnospondyl amphibian. They are characterized by their large flat armored skulls and eyes positioned at the anterior end of their head. Remains of these large reptiles indicate that they would have grown up to at least 10 feet long.
