3.8" Pennsylvanian Fern (Neuropteris) Plate - Kentucky
This is a 3.8" fossil seed fern (Neuropteris) plate, from the Breathitt Formation, Leslie County, Kentucky. This specimen contains 3 sections sections of pinnules (branch of leaflets). It comes from the Late Carboniferous, Pennsylvanian aged forests that formed the coal shales of Kentucky and Ohio. This example is very well preserved and show remarkable detail. Under magnification the smallest venation is easily seen.
Neuropteris is genus of seed fern, extinct species of fern that reproduced from seed as opposed to sporophyte reproduction of most modern ferns.
