3.5" Pennsylvanian Fern (Neuropteris) Plate - Kentucky

This is a 2.5" fossil seed fern (Neuropteris), from the Breathitt Formation, Leslie County, Kentucky. This is a pinnule (branch of leaflets) from the main stem of a fern. It comes from the Late Carboniferous, Pennsylvanian aged forests that formed the coal shales of Kentucky and Ohio. It is beautifully preserved and shows very detailed leaflet venation. In addition to the pinnule, there are sections of leaflets and a Calamites stalk with leaves. This is often referred to as Annularia, a form taxa refering to the leaves of this species rather than the entire plant.

Neuropteris is genus of seed fern, extinct species of fern that reproduced from seed as opposed to sporophyte reproduction of most modern ferns.

It comes with an acrylic display stand.
