12.5" Pleistocene Aged Fossil Bison Skull Section with Horn - Kansas

This is a 12.5" wide skull section with horn from a Pleistocene aged fossil bison (Bison occidentalis), collected from the Alluvium Sand of Northwestern Kansas. This would be the left (anatomically) side of the skull. The skull is hollow and quite light for its size. There is minor crack repair in spots, with the bone over the left eye requiring miner gap fill restoration. Comes with a display stand.

Bison occidentalis is an extinct species of bison that roamed North America between the Pleistocene and Holocene. They were a smaller species of bison in comparison to other's during and prior to their time. It's believed B. occidentalis evolved from B. antiquus and became extinct as a result of competition with other grass eaters.
