1.5" Lichid Trilobite (Echinolichas?) Hypostome - Oklahoma

This is a large, 1.5" wide, hypostome (mouthplate) of a giant, undescribed lichid trilobite from the Haragan Formation of Oklahoma. Over the past 30+ years of digging at the Black Cat Mountain quarry only fragments of this elusive trilobite has been occasionally found. It's believe that it has affinities to Echinolichas, but without more complete material that is uncertain. This trilobite, was likely the largest in the formation, possibly reaching sizes of close to a foot in length.

Trilobites were a very diverse group of extinct marine arthropods. They first appeared in the fossil record in the Early Cambrian (521 million years ago) and went extinct during the Permian mass extinction (250 million years ago). They were one of the most successful of the early animals on our planet: over 25,000 species have been described, filling nearly every evolutionary niche. Due in large part to their hard exoskeletons (shells), they left an excellent fossil record.
