1.1" Fossil Spoon Worm (Coprinoscolex) - Illinois

This is a 1.1" fossil worm (Coprinoscolex) preserved in an ironstone nodule from the Carbondale Formation near Essex, Illinois.

Coprinoscolex ellogimus is the earliest known echiuran in the fossil record. A sediment feeder, it ingested mud, on which its digestive bacteria grew.
